Something's Cookin'

Something's Cookin' is the much-anticipated debut EP from Leeds locals Jabbawoki. The genre melding EP will be released on June 12th following the pre-cursor single 'Unkle Funkle' which debuted on the 22nd of May.

A blend of indie, hip hop and funk, the EP explores a combination of genres to produce a fresh, energetic and eclectic experience for the listener. The more polished and produced sounds of Something’s Cookin’ have been achieved by collaboration with Leeds-based producer, Corey Moore. This has led to such innovations as: the tribal chants of ‘Propane’, the dark, synthesised vocal harmony of ‘Unkle Funkle’ and the harsh and gritty timbre of ‘Interlude’, giving this body of work a truly unique character.

Biography

Jabbawoki are a Leeds based band that formed in 2012. The group is a four piece that are inspired by every corner of the musical world. The band consists of two guitars, with Finlay Vallance taking the lead and Tom Cranston on rhythm and vocals; Matthew Edmunds is on bass and the undisputed king of rhythm Max Lord is on the drums. As a result of jamming together for years, Jabbawoki have developed a unique sound encompassing elements of alternative, funk and rap music. As their own individual tastes in music grew, so did the sounds in their perfomances; after all, how many guitar bands incorporate West Coast hip hop into their sets? Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Funky Destination and Anderson .Paak are amongst some of the many to influence the band resulting in a high octane sound that is enjoyed equally on the EP as it is live.

Jabbawoki have been gigging throughout Leeds and Yorkshire for several years, playing notable venues such as The Wardrobe, Brudenell Social Club and The O2 Academy. They have supported a diverse range of bands including West Coast punk rockers Sextile, Birmingham natives Ivory Wave and upcoming indie band Oddity Road. In addition to this, the band performed at The Chapel Allerton Music and Arts and Mustard Stock festivals.

They were received well by the audience and editor of FMS magazine, Mike Powell cited the band as having a: ‘Very impressive set, really liked your sound.’

Whilst networking in the busy Leeds music scene the band have recorded two singles at Czar Street studios. ‘Femme Fatale’, a more traditional indie song which was the band’s first recording and has been successful across major streaming services with circa 40,000 streams on Spotify. The single ‘Green Eyed Monster’ is more experimental, drawing heavily on the members passion for hip hop. A third follow up single was released in collaboration with producer Corey Moore, resulting in the grungy sound of ‘Nitty’.
